Holbrook Primary – Year 1

Look what we are learning.

Portraits

Today we have been looking at the patterns and shapes in Hans Holbein’s portraits. We chose our favourite portrait and tried our BEST to copy the portrait into our sketch books.

Today in maths we were learning to apply different skills and strategies to solve money problems. We had to use our knowledge of coins and there values, our addition skills and our problem solving skills for today’s lesson.

Warwick castle

Year 1 had a fantastic day at Warwick Castle today. We were able to apply our learning from our ‘Once Upon A Time’ topic.

We had a 'Stories and Shields' workshop in which we designed our own shields to take home with us.

We recognised some of the features of the castle that we have been learning about. Can you name them?

Phonics screening test

20150610-191441.jpg

Next week, year 1 will be taking a phonics screening test. We have sent letters and resources home to provide you with more information about it. You might still however have some questions about it .

The Phonics Screening Check is meant to show how well your child can use the phonics skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1, and to identify students who need extra phonics help.

The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher. Non-words (or nonsense words, pseudo words or alien words) are a collection of letters that will follow phonics rules your child has been taught, but don’t mean anything. Your child will need to read these with the correct sounds to show that they understand the phonics rules behind them.

We have sent other resources home with your child. Here is an example:

Here is a useful website to give you more information about the test:

Here are some useful links to phonics games for your child to practise their reading skills:

Any questions then please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher.

Happy reading!

Pop it on the head

Today we have been revising our music skills. We tapped the pulse and rhythm to different songs and then had a competition to see who could sing our tongue twister the best.

Dancing like king and queens

Today in PE we warmed up playing the bean game and car and caravans. We had to use our working together key to make sure we did not lose our caravan if we were the car. We did this by jogging slowly and turning carefully. After, we practised our class ballroom dance. We have been learning to dance like king and queens just like Queen Victoria would have done.

Can you practise your dancing at home?

Food for all

Today we had a visit from our local vicar. He told us the bible story about feeding the five thousand. We learnt how Jesus shared 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. After, we spoke about the importance of food and how we can buy Fair trade products to help those who are struggling in the world.
